Cultists Kill Student at Rivers University

A first-year student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, was shot on campus on Wednesday by suspected cult members.

Reports say this happened just two days after a violent clash between rival cult groups on Monday. The shooting caused fear among students at the university.

The fight on Monday was between suspected members of the Vikings and the Ku Klux Klan cults. Details about the Wednesday shooting were unclear at the time of this report.

A source close to the victim told newsmen that the student was taken to a hospital for surgery to remove bullet pellets from his body. The source did not give their name or the victim's name due to the sensitive nature of the situation. The source said, “His close friends were contributing money to raise funds for the surgery to happen.”

It could not be confirmed if the victim was part of any cult group.

Meanwhile, a video circulating online showed the injured student on a hospital bed as his classmates brought him back to the campus.

Blessing Agabe, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed on Monday that the earlier clash involved two suspected cult groups. She mentioned that the police are investigating the incident.

When asked about the shooting on Wednesday, Agabe, who is an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said she had seen the video. She promised to check with the Divisional Police Officer in the area for more details and would update our correspondent.

As of Wednesday evening, the police spokesperson had not provided any further information.

In response to the violence, the university administration has suspended all activities for the Students’ Union Government Week. They directed students to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for regular academic activities.

This announcement was made in a statement from the Registrar of the university, Dr Chinonye Ajie, which our correspondent received. The statement warned that any student who did not attend lectures would face consequences. The university management also urged students to avoid actions that could harm their studies or disturb the peace on campus.
