Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, known as Davido, has called his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke's re-election, a big win against strong political opposition.
Davido spoke on Tuesday while talking to journalists at his home after the governor's victory in the Osun State governorship election held on August 15.
He congratulated his uncle, describing the election as a tough fight. He noted that many powerful political figures came together against the governor.
“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.
Davido credited Adeleke’s win mainly to the backing of Osun voters. He praised them for standing by the governor and ensuring their votes were counted.
He said the support for the Adeleke family was overwhelming, adding that he felt emotional several times on election day.
“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.
Davido mentioned that the governor’s win should teach political leaders across Nigeria a lesson. He believes leaders who truly serve their people will get their support during elections.
“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.
The singer also thanked the people of Osun State for backing Adeleke and his family despite what he called intimidation and vote-buying during the election.
Looking ahead, Davido shared plans to boost youth and sports development in the state. As the chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, he said he held off some of his initiatives until after the election.
“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.
He mentioned one idea is to create a recreation centre for young people, featuring football pitches, swimming pools, and basketball courts.
Davido said this centre would help young people discover, develop, and show their sporting talents while promoting healthy recreation.
The singer has been one of Adeleke’s loudest celebrity supporters and was actively involved in the governor’s campaign before the election.
Adeleke won a second term by defeating his main rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, in the August 15 election.
After the election, Davido said he will now focus on projects to improve opportunities for young people in Osun State, especially through sports and recreation.
