Afrobeats star David “Davido” Adeleke has urged people in Osun State to stay peaceful and avoid violence before the upcoming governorship election. He also asked a political figure from Imo State not to meddle in the election.
Davido made this appeal on Tuesday while speaking to supporters as the leader of the youth campaign team for the current Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke.
He praised Mr Adeleke, his uncle, saying he is “one of the best, if not the best” governors the state has had. He encouraged eligible voters to come out peacefully and exercise their rights without fear.
“I speak to you today not just as Davido, but as one of your own, as a voice for our people,” he stated.
The 33-year-old acknowledged the rising tension around the election. But he insisted that violence has no place in democracy.
“I understand the tension and emotions surrounding this election, but I urge everyone to remain calm. Very important. We’ve been calm for how long? Don’t forget we’ve won this thing twice before.
“No shaking. We’ve won it twice before, and we’re going to win it again for the third time, by the grace of God. Let us reject violence. I’ll say it again,” said the “Timeless” hitmaker.
He asked residents to show the world that they are peaceful, brave, and ready to create a better future for Osun State.
Davido also appealed to the unnamed politician from Imo State to support a fair election in Osun State.
“And to our daddy from Imo State, I say this with respect, sir. I’ve heard rumours that there are plans to interfere in the Osun State election or to use the state as a political battleground. I do not say these claims are true, but I ask you, sir, to help promote peace and let the people of Osun choose their candidates freely.
“We have mutual connections, and I have a strong link to Imo State. My wife, Chioma, is from there, which makes this appeal more sincere. Please, let Osun remain peaceful. We say it again. Please, let Osun remain peaceful, one more time. Let Osun remain peaceful. Thank you,” he added.
Additionally, the “Unavailable” singer asked politicians from other parties to respect democracy and let the people decide.
He encouraged voters to show up in large numbers, vote peacefully, reject intimidation, and make their voices heard.
He emphasized that Osun's future lies in their hands.
“Whatever the outcome is, please do not let political ambition endanger the lives and future of the Osun people. I appeal to you, your supporters, and the entire political party system. Let the people come out freely and peacefully to vote for their choice.
“If they choose you, let the victory come from their votes. If they pick someone else, let their choice be honored. Politics is temporary, but Osun will last forever. No political victory is worth violence, destruction, or losing a single life.”
Davido insisted that his uncle, Mr Adeleke, has delivered on his promises and has proof to back it up.
“We have our projects to show for it. We have our integrity to show for it. We have our diligence to show for it. But I felt it was very important for us as the youth campaign team to assure our people, especially the youth, of our views on the upcoming election.
“I speak to you today not just as Davido, but as one of your own, as a voice for our people. Let us reject violence, intimidation, provocation, and most importantly, destruction. To everyone in Osun, come out and vote. Do not be afraid or intimidated. Your vote is your voice, and your choice must be respected. I’ll say it again. Your choice must be respected.
