Dele Momodu, a top member of the African Democratic Congress and publisher of Ovation Magazine, is calling on opposition parties in Osun State to come together and support Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party. This rallying call comes ahead of the governorship election set for August 16.

Momodu believes that uniting the opposition is crucial to stop the All Progressives Congress from taking advantage of their divisions to manipulate the election results.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, Momodu explained that he joined the ADC as part of a larger coalition to face what he calls the “APC cankerworm.” He says this group has harmed Nigeria’s economy, social harmony, religious tolerance, and democratic practices.

He noted that the opposition had initially aimed to avoid the mistakes of past elections by offering a strong alternative to the APC.

“I had prayed fervently against the demon and clash of voluptuous egos. I wished we wouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel since the ADC initially paraded the second, third and fourth leading candidates in the 2023 presidential election,” he said.

“Unfortunately, it did not turn out to be so. But I still did not give up on the hope that Nigerians, not just the parties, would rise up massively against the APC menace,” Momodu added.

Momodu stressed that the political climate in Osun makes it necessary for opposition parties to set aside their personal ambitions and focus on a shared goal.

“It’s foolhardy not to see the need for opposition unity,” he stated.

He urged opposition politicians to “confront reality” and take a practical approach as the election draws near.

“The time has now come for us to confront reality and demonstrate that we indeed possess common sense by being demonstrably practical,” Momodu said.

He argued that the current political situation in Osun demands that opposition parties quickly unite and support Adeleke.

“With the manner APC has turned Osun State into a theatre of war, the only sensible strategy is for all opposition parties to align immediately and back the Accord Party candidate, Governor Ademola Adeleke,” he said.

Momodu called on opposition leaders to focus on the bigger political picture instead of individual ambitions, warning that a split opposition could benefit the APC in the upcoming election.
