The Delta State Police Command has rescued a 25-year-old woman who was a victim of human trafficking. They also arrested a 26-year-old woman accused of trafficking young women to Côte d’Ivoire while pretending to offer them vocational training.
On Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, shared a statement about the incident. The suspect, Ese Betty Isiorho, was caught by officers from the Effurun Area Command after a complaint was made against her. The complaint claimed she tricked the victim with promises of learning hairdressing in Côte d’Ivoire.
The police found out that when the victim got to Côte d’Ivoire, she was allegedly forced into prostitution. The police said the suspect admitted during questioning that she trafficked the rescued victim and another woman, also in her twenties, to Côte d’Ivoire. They were reportedly handed over to a woman known as Madam Purity for prostitution.
After thorough investigation and teamwork, the police successfully rescued the 25-year-old victim and brought her back to Nigeria. The statement mentioned that she has now reunited with her family and is getting medical care. The police are still working to bring back the second victim, who is thought to still be in Côte d’Ivoire, and to catch others involved in the trafficking ring.
The Commissioner of Police for Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the officers who were part of the operation. He stressed the police's commitment to fighting human trafficking and organized crime. Oyeniyi said, "The command remains committed to combating human trafficking and other forms of organized crime. We will continue to intensify efforts to dismantle trafficking syndicates and ensure that those involved are brought to justice."
He also encouraged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious job offers or activities related to trafficking to the police.
This incident happens just days after the Delta State Government, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, and development partners came together to strengthen efforts against human trafficking in the state.
The gathering marked the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Stakeholders warned that traffickers are using fake job offers, vocational training programs, and other misleading opportunities to lure vulnerable young people into exploitation. They called for better teamwork to fight this problem.
