Ebonyi sets up task force to fight illegal mining

The Ebonyi State Government has launched a task force to improve how mining is regulated. This group will help stop illegal mining and prevent loss of revenue in the sector.

At the inauguration on Thursday, Chinedu Nkah, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, said the task force will keep an eye on mining and quarry activities in all three senatorial districts. They will make sure that operators follow the relevant laws and regulations.

Mr Nkah explained that the task force is important because solid minerals play a key role in the state’s economy. He added that operators must stick to Community Development Agreements, safety standards, and pay their required taxes.

He warned mining operators not to leave excavated pits abandoned, engage in dangerous practices, under-report minerals, or transport mineral products illegally, especially at night. This is to ensure safety and proper revenue generation.

The commissioner also instructed the task force to monitor trucks carrying minerals, check revenue payments, and verify official clearances. They must also ensure that banned practices, like using children and pregnant women in mining, do not happen.

He cautioned task force members against extortion and misuse of power. They must get the right approvals before closing down mining companies or taking major actions.

He mentioned that the members will receive operational guidelines and training from the ministry and security agencies. Official ID materials will be given to help identify authorized personnel and prevent impostors.

Chima Ude, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Solid Minerals Development, also spoke at the event. He told task force members to use their ID cards properly. He warned that misusing this privilege could lead to legal trouble.

Mr Udeh said this task force is part of the government’s larger plan to improve oversight, increase revenue, and make sure solid mineral resources significantly benefit Ebonyi and its mining communities.
