Enugu shuts down four private hospitals

The Enugu State Government has shut down four private hospitals in Enugu North Local Government Area. This action is due to their failure to meet required standards.

This information was shared in a statement on Thursday by Chidiogo Ugodu, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health.

Mrs Ugodu mentioned that the hospitals were shut on July 8. This was part of the ministry's ongoing checks on private health facilities in the state. The aim is to ensure quality healthcare and compliance with regulations.

The Commissioner for Health, George Ugwu, started this renewed enforcement effort.

The statement said that Chinyere Ezeudu, the Director of Medical Services, led a team from the ministry. They conducted an unannounced inspection of private health facilities in Enugu North.

Mr Ugwu, who is a professor and a medical doctor, stated that the goal of this exercise is to make sure all private hospitals and healthcare providers follow the rules.

He explained that these rules include renewing operating licenses and registering any facilities not yet registered with the proper authorities.

The commissioner said the team looked at seven private health facilities. They checked their operational status, documentation, licensing, and compliance with healthcare standards.

Mr Ugwu restated the state government’s commitment, under Governor Peter Mbah, to making sure residents have access to safe and quality healthcare services.

“The supervision exercise will continue across the state to ensure that only approved and compliant facilities provide healthcare services,” he said.

The commissioner encouraged private healthcare operators to update their operations. This includes renewing expired licenses and registering unlicensed facilities if needed.

“The ongoing monitoring exercise is not just a regulatory measure but also an important step towards improving the health system and protecting the lives of citizens,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that a few weeks ago, the state government, through the Ministry of Health, shut down three illegal health facilities in the Enugu South Local Government Area.
