Enugu State Steps Up Measures to Stop Ebola Spread
Enugu State is ramping up disease monitoring across all local governments and the airport to prevent Ebola. The government assures there are no current cases in the state.

The Enugu State Government has started serious disease monitoring across all 17 local government areas and at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Emene. This is to stop the spread of Ebola in the state.
The Commissioner for Health in Enugu State, George Ugwu, shared this information during a press conference in Enugu on Wednesday.
Mr Ugwu, who is a professor, said this increased monitoring comes after a recent confirmed case of Ebola in Abuja and the ongoing outbreak in some African countries.
He emphasized that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Enugu.
Mr Ugwu mentioned that the government has been alert and ready due to the state's important role as a major travel and business center. This connects the South-east with other parts of Nigeria and the international community through the airport.
The official said the state government, through the Ministry of Health, has been working with federal agencies like the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, as well as airport authorities.
"The state has intensified disease surveillance across the 17 local government areas of Enugu State and strengthened coordination with relevant agencies and partners.
"Surveillance activities around the Akanu Ibiam International Airport are also being strengthened in collaboration with Port Health Services and other relevant stakeholders," he said.

Mr Ugwu added that the government is keeping its Rapid Response Teams and relevant technical staff on standby. They are reviewing measures to ensure a quick response if any confirmed case appears.
"Public awareness and risk communication activities are also being strengthened to ensure that members of the public receive accurate and timely information," he said. He assured that his ministry will continue to work with federal agencies to stop any possible Ebola spread in the state.
Mr Ugwu urged all public and private health facilities in the state to stay alert and keep a close watch for suspected cases, especially among those with relevant travel or exposure history.
"I urge all health facilities to cooperate fully with the Enugu State Ministry of Health and other response agencies, as early detection and prompt notification are critical to preventing transmission," he said.
The commissioner called on all healthcare workers in Enugu State to understand that they are the first line of defence in protecting our communities. They must follow strict infection prevention and control measures.
"The public is advised to maintain good hand hygiene, avoid contact with the body fluids of sick persons, seek medical attention promptly when necessary, and report suspected cases to the appropriate health authorities," he added.
