The Anambra State Police Command has started a serious investigation into a suspected child trafficking ring. This follows the rescue of a 37-year-old woman from an angry mob in the Awada area of Obosi.
In a statement from the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Thursday, the suspect is named Anurika Nweme. Police operatives from the Awada Divisional Headquarters found her at Divine Mercy Hospital. Eyewitnesses reported that she had sneaked into the hospital on Tuesday.
“Eyewitnesses said the suspect entered the hospital on the afternoon of June 23, 2026. She was dressed like a nurse and was seen secretly recording videos of newborn babies in the maternity ward.
“When hospital staff and others confronted her, she claimed to work for the hospital. But when the management checked, they confirmed she was not on their staff,” Ikenga wrote.
He also mentioned that the police rescued her from the mob and have placed her in protective custody. This is to keep her safe while the case is being investigated.
“The suspect is now in protective custody and helping the police in identifying other people involved.
“We will share more updates on the investigation as they come in,” Ikenga added.
This incident is part of a larger effort in the region to tackle illegal adoption and child trafficking activities.
