Peter Azi, 57, the former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, has passed away.
A family member, John Azi, shared the news of the ex-speaker's death in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on Thursday.
He mentioned that Azi died on Wednesday, 12 August, but did not reveal the cause of death.
"With total submission to the will of God Almighty, the Azi Ajang family announces the passing unto glory of their son, brother, and father, Mr Peter Azi, the former Speaker of Plateau House of Assembly," Azi said.
"He has peacefully joined his creator."
Azi served as Speaker from June 2015 to July 2018 during former Governor Simon Lalong's time in office.
He was a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and stayed active in Plateau's politics even after leaving office.
He led the House during a busy time in Plateau State's political scene.
His death has left political friends, lawmakers, and community members in mourning.
The late ex-lawmaker climbed the political ladder in Plateau to become the leader of the legislature, which was the height of his career.
The grieving family said they would share burial arrangements soon.
