The police in Akwa Ibom have arrested four suspects for the alleged mob killing of 21-year-old Emmanuel Effiong.

Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed this in a statement in Uyo on Friday.

John said the suspects killed the victim and buried his body in a shallow grave.

The investigation found that the deceased was accused of stealing chickens and eggs on April 19 from a poultry farm in Mbak 4 Community in Uyo Local Government Area.

The police spokesperson said the victim was beaten with sticks and machetes until he died.

The probe started after they got credible information along with a viral video showing the victim being violently attacked by a group of people.

"In the disturbing footage, the victim was seen lying helpless in a pool of blood with his hands and legs tied, before being dragged on the ground beside a white Mitsubishi pick-up van," she explained.

"Acting quickly on the intelligence, our operatives began a thorough investigation which led to the arrest of the four main suspects," Ms John added.

She also mentioned that investigators recovered important items linked to the crime, including the Mitsubishi pick-up van that was reportedly used.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, condemned the incident. He emphasized that anyone suspected of a crime should be handed over to the police or other legal authorities for proper handling.

He stated that the command is committed to protecting human life and upholding the law.
