Four Chinese Nationals Arrested for Illegal Mining in Niger

Four Chinese nationals have been arrested by the Niger State Government. They were allegedly running an illegal mining site in Maiya’aki village, located in Lapai Local Government Area.

The arrest followed a visit by Muhammad Danjuma, the Commissioner for Mineral Resources. He acted after receiving reports from the Emir of Lapai, Umar Bago Tafida III, about the suspected mining activities by foreigners in the village.

The emir instructed the district head of Abugi, Mohammed Mustapha, also known as Chiroma Lapa, to check the site with his team on Tuesday. They were to find out who was operating there and if they had the right permits for mining.

During their visit, the traditional leaders found that the mining activities were not approved by the state government. This issue was then reported to the commissioner, who went to the site to look into it further.

When he arrived, the Chinese nationals could not show any valid licenses or permits for their operations. After this, the commissioner ordered the arrest of four of them and told the others to stay at the site while their equipment and property were secured.

The arrested men were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and necessary actions. This incident is part of the state government's effort to crack down on illegal mining activities.

In August, the Commissioner for Mineral Resources had warned people, companies, and groups involved in illegal mining to stop or face arrest and prosecution. The government emphasized that operators must have the required licenses and approvals before starting any mining work.

The state government has also increased enforcement actions recently. In June, they shut down six suspected illegal mineral processing sites in Kontagora Local Government Area, working together with the NSCDC Mining Marshals.

Earlier in May, seven people were arrested during a raid against illegal mining in a residential area of Minna. Nine motorcycles believed to be used for this illegal work were also seized.

The government had previously arrested two Chinese nationals at the Zuzungi mining site in Katcha Local Government Area in April. They were also accused of illegal mining and were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation.

The increased enforcement comes amid growing concerns about illegal mining across Nigeria. Security and regulatory bodies are increasingly targeting unauthorized operators and foreign nationals.

In June, for example, 15 Chinese nationals and nine Nigerians were taken to court in Abuja for illegal lithium mining in Nasarawa State. In Niger State, the Ministry of Mineral Resources is responsible for managing and monitoring mining activities. They aim to ensure that mining is done sustainably and according to Nigeria's mining laws.

The recent actions in Lapai show the state government's determination to tackle illegal mining and make sure that operators follow the necessary rules.
