Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has put a stop to a N1.3 billion hospital renovation project after raising concerns about the quality of the work. He pointed out the use of low-quality materials and failure to follow project guidelines.
This project is meant to renovate and remodel the Gumel General Hospital. Governor Namadi carried out an unscheduled night inspection at the hospital in Gumel Local Government Area.
The contract for the project was given to Yasmeen Automobile Nigeria Limited last December. The company was expected to finish the work within eight months.
“The work is very poor; that is the truth. What we asked to be done in Gumel is the total renovation of this hospital, which includes remodelling where necessary,” the governor said.
He expressed his disappointment with the contractor's work. “What I have seen is not what I asked them to do, so I directed that this work be suspended completely,” he added.
The governor made it clear that he will not accept substandard work. “We are going to sit with the contractor. The contractor is not doing what we asked him to do, and we are not ready to take it. Finish!” he stated.
Governor Namadi’s visit to Gumel General Hospital got many people talking on social media. Many called for him to check other hospital renovation projects in the state.
One person specifically asked the governor to look into the Gwaram Cottage Hospital, which is also getting upgrades. They claimed the renovation work there is not up to standard.
In March 2025, Governor Namadi ordered a redo of a N10.8 billion Gully Erosion Control Project. He had concerns about the use of poor materials and questioned if the project would last its intended 100 years.
