Kaduna Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has sued businessman Nasiru Idris at the Kaduna State Upper Sharia Court. This is over claims made in various media outlets.
In a criminal complaint filed by his lawyer, M. T. Mohammed, Gumi asked the court to issue a summons against Idris. The businessman lives at No. 2 Suleiman Crescent, off Alkali Road in Kaduna.
The lawsuit says that Idris made false and damaging public statements during interviews. He accused Gumi of abducting his wife and holding her for more than 11 months. Idris also claimed Gumi forged official documents and stole his belongings.
Gumi believes these actions amount to defamation, which goes against Section 37 of the law. He argues this is punishable under Section 138 of the Sharia Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2002.
Details of the dispute
The case arises from a personal issue between Idris and his Moroccan wife, Khadija Diab. In an interview with RFI Hausa, Idris said he married Khadija in Morocco and brought her to Nigeria.
He claimed that after taking her to Gumi’s home for marriage counseling, he was kept from seeing her for almost 11 months. Idris further alleged that Gumi kidnapped his wife, meddled in their marriage, and tried to change their marriage documents.
Gumi has denied all these claims. Court documents obtained by PREMIUM TIMES show that Khadija left her home and sought refuge with Gumi’s wife, who is also from Morocco. She accused her husband of domestic violence, emotional abuse, neglect, and fraud.
Khadija has filed for divorce against Idris at the Upper Sharia Court. Meanwhile, her lawyer stated that she has gone back to Morocco to be with her family. The lawyer also said that Idris' public statements were false and aimed at damaging Gumi’s reputation.
