Tragedy hit Kuyello District in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, Kaduna State on Monday. Armed bandits invaded Kujijiro farmlands and killed at least nine farmers.
Local sources say the farmers were working in their fields when the attackers showed up with guns and opened fire on them.
Ishaq Kasai, a security expert and community leader, confirmed this sad news to PREMIUM TIMES late Monday. He mentioned that several farmers are still missing.
āI can confirm that the attack took place today and that nine of our farmers were unfortunately killed while working on their farmlands,ā Mr Kasai said.
Mr Kasai, who used to be the Chairman of the Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU), did not give the names of those who died. He said he had to keep that private for "security reasons."
As of now, the police and state security officials have not released any statements about this killings.
This attack is a serious setback for the peace efforts in the Birnin Gwari Emirate. The government had previously helped settle conflicts between bandits and farmers.
The area is one of the main farming regions in Kaduna State. It has seen a troubling rise in violence recently.
With the rainy season at its peak and farming work in full swing, many farming communities are living in fear.
Farmers in the district are now in a tough spot. They must choose between risking their lives to take care of their crops or leaving them and facing hunger and financial hardship.
Community leaders have warned that if armed groups keep targeting rural farmers, it could lead to serious food shortages in the area.
