Gunmen attack village in Niger State

Gunmen attack village in Niger State

Suspected gunmen have attacked Kigbera village in Konkoso Ward, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. They burned houses and businesses in an incident that shows the tough security situation in the area.

The attack happened on Thursday afternoon when the armed men entered the village. Many people had already left the village because of repeated threats and attacks on nearby communities.

Kigbera is close to the Nigeria, Benin Republic border, near Babana in Borgu Local Government Area.

Residents say several communities in the area have been abandoned due to constant attacks. Many displaced residents have moved to nearby places like Kontagora, New Bussa, and Mokwa. Some have even crossed into the Republic of Benin to find safety.

One resident, who asked to stay anonymous for fear of retaliation, said those meant to protect lives and property have failed to provide enough security for the affected areas.

The resident urged the federal government, Niger State government, and security agencies to work harder to bring peace and safety back to the region.

There are worries that even with military, naval, and Air Force bases in New Bussa, the communities in Borgu still face attacks. This is because the security forces are too far away to help quickly when trouble starts.

The ongoing attacks have raised fears about the safety of people living in rural areas. There is also concern over the destruction of livelihoods and the displacement of communities along the border.

As of now, the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies have not made any official statements about the attack.
