Gunmen kill 85-year-old community leader in Edo

Gunmen have killed an 85-year-old leader of the Iyowa community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The victim, Reuben Owie, was shot dead by two unknown armed men at his home in Iguosa, close to Okhunhun in Benin City.

This tragic event took place around 8:15pm on Sunday, August 2, 2026.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Saturday.

ASP Eno Ikoedem, the command’s Public Relations Officer, shared details in a statement. She said the deceased’s son, Osayomwanbo Owie, reported the case.

“The police received a report from Osayomwanbo Owie, the deceased’s son, after the attack at his father’s home at No. 2 Abu Street, Iguosa, off Okhunhun Road, Benin City.

“On Aug. 2, 2026, at about 2015hrs, Osayomwanbo Owie reported that his father, Hon. Reuben Owie, 85 years old, Secretary of Iyowa Community, was attacked by two unknown gunmen at his residence.

“One of the attackers shot the victim in the head, leading to his death,” she stated.

Ikoedem mentioned that police officers went to the scene, recorded the details, and recovered the body.

She also said the deceased’s body has been taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

The police spokesperson added that they are still investigating the incident. Efforts are being made to identify and catch the suspects.
