The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) has confirmed that one of its senior officers, Abdussalam Ude, was killed in a shooting at his home in the Phase 5 Army Housing Estate, Kurudu, Abuja.
PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported that Colonel Ude died in a gunfight with attackers who tried to kidnap him. His wife, driver, and security guard were also injured in the attack.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, the DIA said that Colonel Ude was attacked by unknown gunmen around 10:45 p.m. on Monday, July 27.
“Security and Law Enforcement Agencies have started a full investigation into the incident, and every effort is being made to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible,” the statement from acting assistant director, protocol, J.E. Oti, said.
The agency described the late officer as a dedicated professional who served Nigeria with “exceptional dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment” to national defense and security.
“The Agency is working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the incident are thoroughly investigated,” the statement continued.
The DIA also sent condolences to Colonel Ude’s family, his colleagues, and members of the Armed Forces.
Before his death, Colonel Ude held several important military intelligence and counter-terrorism roles. He was involved in operations against insurgents in Nigeria’s North-east and had international intelligence duties in Chad and France.
Hailing from Enugu State, Colonel Ude was set to be promoted to brigadier general next year. His burial was planned for Tuesday at the Mambilla Mosque in Abuja, following Islamic rites.
