Gunmen have killed two people and kidnapped the All Progressives Congress Chairman of Rogo Local Government Area in Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Fanka. This happened during an attack on the community overnight.
This latest attack took place just a day after gunmen killed the APC Chairman of Rantan Ward in Bebeji Local Government Area, Alhaji Garba Buba, and another resident, Sulaiman Zunduma.
The Rogo attack reportedly happened around 11 PM on Monday. The gunmen stormed the area and fired shots, causing residents to run for safety.
A resident, who wanted to stay anonymous for security reasons, told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday that the attackers killed two people who tried to stop them from taking Fanka.
"The two people killed couldn’t stop them from whisking away the party chairman because they were in possession of sophisticated weapons," the resident said.
This incident has raised alarms about the security situation in Kano. Kidnappers and bandits have been attacking different communities in the state in recent days.
On Sunday night, gunmen attacked Rantan community in Bebeji LGA. They killed Buba, the APC ward chairman, and Zunduma. The Kano State Police Command has started an investigation into this attack and is working to catch those responsible.
The Rantan attack happened just hours after bandits attacked Chiromawa community in Garun Mallam LGA on Saturday night. During that attack, they kidnapped the Sarkin Noman Kano, Alhaji Yusif Nadabo.
Luckily, police rescued the traditional title holder after security forces and residents responded quickly. Three residents were reported injured in that incident.
These three attacks have occurred in nearby parts of Kano within about 72 hours. This has raised new worries about the rise of kidnappings and armed attacks in the state.
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, announced on Monday that the Federal Government is working on a five-year defence and security plan due to the recent attacks in Kano.
Efforts to reach the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, for more information on the latest attack were not successful. Calls to his phone were unanswered, and a WhatsApp message has not received a response.
