Ifo Local Government Chairman Calls for Peace Over Boundary Dispute with Lagos

Ifo Local Government Chairman Calls for Peace Over Boundary Dispute with Lagos

The Chairman of Ifo Local Government in Ogun State, Kusimo Idris Olalekan, has called on the Lagos State Government to speak to the Ojodu Local Government chairman about a signpost that says, "Welcome to Lagos State." This signpost is at a spot on the Yakoyo, Ojodu Road that both states claim.

Olalekan raised concerns about this signpost. He said it has sparked worries about the boundary between Ogun and Lagos states, especially in the Yakoyo area of Isheri-Ojodu Ward. Ifo Local Government believes this area is part of Ogun State.

The council is worried that the signpost could confuse residents and travelers about where Ogun ends and Lagos begins. This comes at a time when there are questions about the borders of both states, especially after Ogun State built a road under Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Ifo Local Government insists that the disputed area belongs to it. The council asked the Lagos State Government to step in and tell the Ojodu Local Government chairman to stop actions that could worsen the boundary disagreement.

The council pointed out that the issue of where the boundary lies has been a problem for years. They mentioned that Lagos State has tried several times to claim areas that Ogun State believes belong to them.

They warned that these actions could increase tension and uncertainty for the people living there. The council stressed that both state governments and their local authorities must handle this matter carefully and responsibly.

Ifo Local Government wants an official decision on the boundary based on government records, approved survey coordinates, and other relevant documents. This would help clarify the exact limits of both states.

The council believes that a resolution based on proper records would prevent more misunderstandings. It will also protect residents' interests and help maintain peace between Ogun and Lagos states.

Olalekan also urged the Lagos State Government to ensure that local government officials do not disrupt efforts to keep good relations between the two states, especially in areas near their boundary.

Reaffirming Ifo Local Government’s commitment to its territory, the chairman said they will keep defending their residents' rights while seeking a solution to this issue through the right channels.

The council also called on everyone involved to be calm and respect the established boundaries until there is an official clarification on the disputed area.
