Increased Security at Jos Wildlife Park Following Night Grazing Issues

Authorities in Plateau State have increased security at Jos Wildlife Park. This follows reports of illegal night grazing by herders in the conservation area.

The Plateau State Tourism Corporation noted that these incursions usually happen between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. During this time, there are fewer staff members in the park, making it more vulnerable to such activities.

In a statement by Thomas Artu for the management, they explained how herders access the park. They use water channels and break padlocks on gates along the western boundary. This area is near the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) headquarters.

Officials warned that these actions bring serious risks. They threaten the environment and wildlife by destroying habitats.

The recent breaches come after the park was fenced as part of the ACRESAL programme. This project started because of repeated reports that criminals and kidnappers were using the area as hiding spots and escape routes.

Security sources mentioned that the park has been linked to kidnapping and other violent crimes. Victims were moved through the park’s thick vegetation to avoid security patrols.

These issues increased public fear. This made the government focus on strengthening security measures in the park.

In response, the park management has sealed all pedestrian entry points temporarily. They have also increased patrols throughout the reserve. Joint security operations with the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies are ongoing to arrest and prosecute those involved.

The corporation stated that arrests and prosecutions of herders and illegal miners have already happened. They see this as part of a larger plan to take back the park from environmental harm and criminal activities.

The state government announced that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has ordered both urgent and long-term actions. These are to build on the successes of the fencing project and secure the park as a vital ecological and tourism asset for Plateau State.

Authorities also praised nearby communities, especially Dong Kassa, for their alertness. They encouraged residents to keep reporting any suspicious activities around the park.
