Kano Assembly suspends three local government chairmen

The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended three local government chairmen for allegedly misusing public funds.

The suspended chairpersons are Abubakar Mustapha from Rogo Local Government, Bello Dadanya from Bagwai Local Government, and Alhassan Salisu from Bebeji Local Government.

The suspension was made public in a statement from Kamaluddeen Shawai, the chief press secretary to the Speaker of the House.

The statement said the Assembly took this decision after accepting a report from the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Lawan Hussaini, the Majority Leader of the House, presented the report on behalf of the committee chairman. He mentioned that the Assembly had received several complaints from residents in the affected local governments.

The complaints claimed financial mismanagement, misuse of office, breach of public trust, and various administrative issues against the council leaders.

Mr Hussaini said the committee held discussions with officials from the three local governments before making a final decision. They reviewed council records and looked at various documents.

He pointed out that the Assembly's actions were based on Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which allows state legislative bodies to investigate and oversee public institutions.

After accepting the committee's recommendations, the House ordered that its decision be sent to the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for immediate action.

The Assembly also instructed the vice chairpersons of Rogo, Bebeji, and Bagwai Local Governments to take over the management of their councils until the House committee completes its final investigation.
