The Assembly of Health Care Professionals in Katsina State has announced a seven-day warning strike starting from 8 September. This decision comes after unresolved issues with the state government.
The assembly shared this information in a statement signed on Tuesday in Katsina. Ibrahim Balange, the assembly's chairman, along with chairmen and secretaries from three other unions, signed the statement.
The unions involved include the Health Workers Union of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, the Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria, and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria.
The notice was sent to the State Head of Service after the 21-day ultimatum given to the Katsina State government expired on 11 August.
Mr Balange stated that the ultimatum ended without any serious effort from the government to meet the union’s demands. He explained that the assembly's members agreed to start the warning strike at 12 midnight on Tuesday, 8 September.
He warned that if the government does not respond to their demands during the seven-day warning strike, the unions will move to an indefinite strike.
“For the avoidance of doubt, over the years that we have been on this struggle, the state government has never demonstrated any form of seriousness on our long overdue legitimate demands, despite admitting the justification of our cries,” he said.
Mr Balange urged the public to understand the situation and hold the government accountable for any problems that might arise from the strike. He added that all possible ways to peacefully resolve the issues have been explored.
