Keyamo launches waste recycling project, checks upgraded terminal at Lagos airport

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has launched the first phase of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s (FAAN) Sustainable Waste Management Programme. He also inspected the upgraded Pilgrims’ Terminal at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

Mr Keyamo shared this news on Thursday in a post on his official X page. He was joined by the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Olubunmi Kuku.

The minister explained that the waste management program introduces colour-coded recycling bins. This is aimed at encouraging proper waste separation. He described it as the first phase of a plan to make Nigeria’s airports cleaner and better for the environment. He said this initiative shows FAAN’s commitment to improving environmental practices at airports across the country.

After the launch, Mr Keyamo checked out the upgraded Pilgrims’ Terminal. The terminal now has a 300-seat passenger waiting area, modern VIP and VVIP lounges, free high-speed Wi-Fi, a fully air-conditioned mosque, and better screening and security systems.

He praised FAAN’s management for both projects and asked them to keep the good work going.

“I commend the management of FAAN for these initiatives and encourage them to keep up the tempo in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” the minister stated.

In another statement, FAAN called the waste management program a big step towards cleaner and more sustainable airports in Nigeria. They asked passengers and other airport users to support the initiative by throwing waste in the right recycling bins.

“As you travel, your small actions can make a big difference. Dispose of your waste in the right bin, support recycling, and help us create an airport environment we’re all proud of,” FAAN said.

These efforts come as the federal government works to modernise airport facilities and improve services across Nigeria’s aviation sector. The Pilgrims’ Terminal at MMIA is one of the main departure points for Muslim pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah.

Upgrading the terminal is expected to make travel more comfortable and improve the movement of passengers during busy pilgrimage times. It will also enhance security checks and other airport services.

The Sustainable Waste Management Programme shows the growing focus on environmental sustainability in airport operations. Airports worldwide are adopting waste segregation and recycling systems to improve sanitation, cut pollution, and meet international sustainability standards.

FAAN mentioned that the colour-coded recycling bins at MMIA are just the first phase of a nationwide rollout. This program aims to encourage responsible waste disposal and create cleaner airport environments throughout Nigeria.
