An All Progressives Congress group in Kwara State, called the Kwara APC Peace Initiative, has urged party members who are upset to find peace and avoid actions that could harm the party. This follows disagreements from the party’s primary elections in May 2026.
The group warned that if the issues from the primary elections are not resolved, they could harm the party's unity and its chances in the 2027 general elections.
At a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Tajudeen Abioye, who leads the initiative, explained that the disagreements after the governorship, Senate, and House of Representatives primaries could weaken the party's unity and chances in the upcoming elections.
He said the initiative was formed by worried leaders from different sectors, including education and public service, to create a space for peace and reconciliation within the party.
"The May 2026 APC primary elections in Kwara State for the positions of Governor, Senate, and House of Representatives caused disagreements among aspirants, party members, and supporters.
If we do not address these issues, they pose a serious risk to our party's unity, strength, and chances in the 2027 general elections," he said.
Abioye stated that the initiative aims to find the root causes of the disagreements after the primary elections. It also plans to speak with party members in a neutral way, rebuild trust among members, keep the party united, and discourage defections and actions against the party.
He also mentioned that the group would gather its findings and give independent recommendations to the party leadership.
Abioye shared that in the last two weeks, members of the initiative have met with important stakeholders through in-person meetings, conference calls, and phone discussions across the state.
"We have talked to public office holders, party elders, aspirants for governor, Senate, and House of Representatives, along with youth and women groups.
We thank God that our efforts have brought some positive outcomes. We appreciate all stakeholders for their time and attention," he said.
He emphasized that the members of the initiative have put aside their personal interests to focus on peace within the ruling party.
"The Kwara APC Peace Initiative has put aside personal interests and is working only for peace and unity in our party," he said, expressing hope that the APC in Kwara would become stronger through reconciliation.
The group also praised the state leadership of the APC for forming a reconciliation committee led by retired Col. Abdulwahab Abimbola Lawal.
He urged members who are upset to settle their differences through talks instead of making public arguments.
