Kwara hospitals start using digital medical records

State-owned hospitals in Kwara are starting to use electronic medical records (EMR). This move aims to improve health information management and update public healthcare services in the state.

Abdulraheem Malik, the Executive Secretary of the KW-HMB, shared this news with PREMIUM TIMES in Ilorin, the capital of the state.

He mentioned that this project, part of the HOPE-PHC initiative, will train healthcare workers on the new system starting in November.

The digital healthcare program should cut down on the use of paper records. It will help healthcare providers access patients’ medical histories easily and ensure better care at public hospitals across the state.

The system will also help improve how hospitals run and support better decision-making in management.

This rollout follows a previous pilot program that involved six hospitals. It is part of the state government's ongoing goal to bring digital solutions into healthcare services.

The initiative is also in line with the board’s efforts to improve health information management. This includes setting up a Data Management Committee in August 2026.

Mr Malik praised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for backing the initiative. He called it a big step towards a more efficient and technology-driven public healthcare system.

He stated that using electronic medical records would enhance hospital operations and improve how patient information is managed. This will lead to better clinical interactions across the state.

Mr Malik confirmed that the board is committed to working with all relevant parties to make sure the program is a success. The goal is to provide more effective and patient-focused healthcare services to the people.

The training for staff set for November aims to give healthcare workers the skills they need to use the system well.

Once fully in place, the initiative should improve how patients’ health information is managed and help with better care coordination in public hospitals across Kwara State.
