The Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority has fired one of its staff and lowered the ranks of two others. This came after an investigation into claims of extorting drivers during the monthly environmental sanitation in Ilorin.
The decision was announced in a statement on Monday by Olawuyi Olalekan, the Head of Media and Public Relations of KWARTMA. This followed a viral video showing three staff members allegedly acting unethically at the Geri Alimi Roundabout during the sanitation exercise on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
The video raised public concern and led the management to look into the actions of the staff involved.
Abdullahi Oba, the Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA, recognized the worries raised by the public. He said the behavior shown in the video did not reflect the values or standards of the authority.
Oba stated that KWARTMA has a strict policy against extortion, bribery, corruption, and all types of misconduct by its staff.
According to the statement, the three staff members involved were ordered to report to the Provost Department for questioning and investigation.
They were later called before the Senior Staff Management Committee to answer the allegations and go through disciplinary actions based on public service rules.
After the investigation and hearings, the three staff members were found guilty and punished accordingly. These punishments took effect from July 9, 2026. Oba described the firing of one staff member as a significant disciplinary action in the agency's history.
"The dismissal shows how seriously the management takes corruption, extortion, and other forms of misconduct," Oba said.
He added that the disciplinary measures would serve as a warning to other staff members and strengthen the authority's commitment to keeping public trust. Oba urged all KWARTMA officers to maintain high standards of professionalism, integrity, discipline, and accountability in their work.
"Any staff member caught in extortion, bribery, corruption, or other unethical actions will face proper disciplinary measures based on public service rules. There will be no protected individuals in our efforts to keep discipline, integrity, and professionalism within KWARTMA. Anyone found guilty of misconduct will face suitable actions," Oba warned.
The authority also assured the public that its staff would continue to perform their duties professionally, courteously, and responsibly while following the law and approved procedures.
KWARTMA stated that this action is part of its promise to transparency, accountability, and due process in handling cases of misconduct.
The authority reaffirmed its mission to promote road safety, protect lives and property, ensure orderly traffic management, and provide quality service to the people of Kwara State.
