The Labour Party has announced Hajia Bintu Konto as its vice presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. She will run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Chibuzo Okereke.

LP National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, shared this news in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.

He stated, "The decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and reflected our commitment to presenting a ticket that embodies competence, integrity, inclusiveness, patriotism and proven capacity for public service."

He added, "Her experience in governance engagement, humanitarian coordination, women’s empowerment and public policy, as well as her fluency in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, would strengthen the party’s presidential ticket."

Asogwa noted that her nomination shows the party's commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and capable leadership. He believes the Okereke-Konto ticket represents a new generation of leadership focused on the people. This leadership aims to restore hope, strengthen national institutions, revive the economy, improve security and ensure responsible governance.

The party urged Nigerians to support its presidential ticket as the 2027 election approaches.

Konto is from the north. She is a trained nurse, midwife, health educator and public health specialist, holding a Master’s degree in Public Health.

With over thirty years of experience, she has worked in healthcare delivery, humanitarian efforts and community development, especially in conflict areas in Northern Nigeria.

Konto has held various leadership roles, including as Community and Government Liaison Programme Officer. In this role, she collaborated with governments, traditional institutions, civil society groups, and local communities on health, nutrition, water, sanitation, hygiene and humanitarian projects.

This announcement comes just a day after the All Progressives Congress officially confirmed Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

The nomination was formally submitted to the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, in Abuja for onward submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission, as required by the Electoral Act.

This decision put to rest months of speculation that President Tinubu might choose a northern Christian as the VP candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
