Makinde advises Oyo monarchs to stay out of politics

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has told traditional rulers in the state to avoid getting involved in politics as the 2027 elections approach. He said those who take part in political activities should expect to be treated like politicians.

Makinde shared this message on Saturday at the new palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola. This was during the monarch’s first anniversary on the throne and the awarding of the honorary title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland.

The governor encouraged traditional rulers to stay neutral and focus on their roles. He said they should work on keeping peace, unity, and development in their areas.

He stated, “The traditional institution occupies a sensitive position in society and should not be dragged into partisan political contests.

“Monarchs are expected to serve as fathers to all political actors and residents in their domains, irrespective of their political affiliations. Any traditional ruler who chooses to openly participate in partisan politics should be prepared to be regarded as a politician rather than being treated solely as a traditional ruler.

“If you want to play politics, then you should be ready to be treated as a politician. But if you want to remain a traditional ruler, then stay away from politics,” the governor warned.

Makinde assured that his government respects the traditional institution. He promised to keep supporting monarchs throughout the state.

He made it clear that this support should not be seen as an invitation for traditional rulers to get involved in politics.

The governor also urged traditional rulers to promote peace and support projects that will improve the lives of their people.

“The traditional institution remains an important pillar of governance, especially at the grassroots, and should therefore be protected from unnecessary political divisions,” he said.

Makinde highlighted the need for campaigns focused on issues rather than personal attacks and political tricks. He urged candidates to clearly present their plans and ideas to the people.

Guests at the event included traditional rulers, political leaders, government officials, and other important Nigerians who came to celebrate the Eleruwa’s first year on the throne.
