Mustapha Kwankwaso, the first son of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, has been chosen as the running mate for the NDC governorship candidate in Kano, Aminu Abdulsalam.
Mustapha was the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development until he stepped down in January.
The news came from the elder Kwankwaso’s spokesperson, Saifullahi Hassan, in a short message on social media.
“Congratulations to His Excellency Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso on emerging as the NDC Deputy Gubernatorial Candidate,” Mr Hassan said.
The announcement happened after a meeting with stakeholders led by the senior Kwankwaso at his home on Miller Road.
Mr Abdulsalam and Mustapha Kwankwaso worked together in the Kano State Executive Council under Governor Abba Yusuf. A disagreement led to changes in the state’s leadership earlier this year.
Governor Yusuf, who was elected on the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) platform, switched to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
After the governor’s move, officials had to decide whether to stay in the government or support Mr Kwankwaso.
