Nigeria boosts funding for security tech and intelligence

The Nigerian government says it will keep investing in technology, intelligence, and operational skills to fight insecurity. This comes as serious security problems continue in some areas, even with reported successes by security forces.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, spoke on Monday during a media chat with senior editors and journalists in Abuja.

Mr Idris defended the government's security efforts. He said President Bola Tinubu has improved the operational skills of the armed forces, intelligence agencies, and other security bodies. This has been done through better coordination, equipment, logistics, and support for those working on the frontlines.

He mentioned that security forces have had successes in many areas. These include killing terrorist leaders, disrupting criminal networks, rescuing hostages, and breaking down criminal hideouts.

He also said more actions against crude oil theft, illegal refining, and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta have helped increase oil production and protect national earnings.

Still, the minister admitted that insecurity remains a big worry in some parts of the country. “Every incident of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, or communal violence is a matter of grave concern to the President and the Federal Government,” he said.

“We do not minimize the pain of affected families or the anxiety of communities still confronting these threats.”

Mr Idris assured Nigerians that the government will keep working to restore security across the country. He added that Mr Tinubu continues to demand results from security leaders.

“Let me assure Nigerians that the federal government will neither relent nor retreat in its determination to secure every part of our country,” he said.

He stated that the government's investments in staff, technology, intelligence, and operational skills aim to achieve lasting security.

“The security of Nigerians is not negotiable,” he said. He added that the government will keep protecting vulnerable communities and work towards a country where citizens can live, travel, farm, trade, and work safely.
