Nigerian Army troops from the 18 Brigade have rescued nine kidnapped victims and stopped terrorist attacks in Mariga and Rijau Local Government Areas of Niger State.
Captain Adebayo Adewumi, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, shared this news on X on Friday. The troops achieved these successes as they stepped up their operations against terrorists and criminals in their area.
On Wednesday, August 12, soldiers from the Nigerian Army Training Centre Admin Battalion, based in Kotonkoro, rescued the nine kidnapped victims during sustained operations in Mariga LGA.
After the rescue, the victims were handed over to representatives from the Mariga Local Government for proper documentation and to reunite them with their families.
In a different operation on the same day, troops on patrol in the Warari area of Rijau LGA encountered a terrorist ambush and cleared it.
While searching the area, the troops found seven motorcycles, one camel, 47 cattle, and 18 sheep, which were thought to have been stolen from local communities. The authorities received the recovered livestock.
On August 10, troops from the Brigade’s Quick Response Force worked with 311 Artillery Regiment and Chief of Army Staff Special Intervention Battalion X to stop a terrorist attack aimed at communities around Inana Village, Majal, and Tunga Bisallah in Rijau LGA.
Acting on strong intelligence, the troops intercepted the terrorists as they tried to enter the communities. The attackers, who were on motorcycles, ran away towards a nearby forest when they saw the troops.
The soldiers engaged the fleeing terrorists, forcing them to leave behind their weapons and motorcycles. Some of the attackers likely suffered gunshot wounds during the exchange.
After the chase, the troops found one AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and various types of ammunition. They also recovered one motorcycle and destroyed six others.
The commander of the 18 Brigade praised the troops for their courage, resilience, and professionalism. He encouraged them to keep up their efforts and stay alert.
He also urged the troops to work harder to defeat terrorists and criminals in the state.
The brigade commander emphasized that troops should continue to gather reliable information from local communities to disrupt criminal activities and limit the movements of terrorists.
He noted that the achievements so far show the commitment of Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, to control the area, increase offensive operations, and fight against terrorism and crime.
The commander further called on the troops to chase down and eliminate criminals in their area to protect vulnerable communities and ensure safety for lives and property.
