Troops from the Nigerian Army have seized AK-47 rifles, other weapons, and ammunition during an operation in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The troops, working under Sector 8 of Operation ENDURING PEACE as part of Operation HARD KNOCK, started the operation after receiving reliable information about a planned attack on Mwar Community in Chakfem Kingdom.
The information gathered on August 19, 2026, showed a serious threat from suspected bandit militias.
The Army's initial findings indicated that the planned attack might be connected to the reported theft of an unconfirmed number of cattle by some young people from the community.
The Army posted on X on Thursday, stating, "Consequently, troops were immediately deployed to conduct a fighting patrol and raid suspected locations, with the dual objective of recovering the missing cattle and apprehending those responsible."
"Troops deployed drones and other surveillance capabilities to search surrounding settlements and bush locations for the missing cattle, but no traces of the animals were found after a systematic search."
According to the Army, intelligence pointed to Pantong Stanley and other youths from the community as suspected culprits.
"Acting on the intelligence, troops conducted a snap raid on the residence of Pantong Stanley, who was not present at the time of the operation," they said.
The operation led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one locally made AK-47 rifle, one locally made revolver rifle, two Dane guns, and 15 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.
The Army noted that troops, along with the police and other security agencies, are continuing offensive actions and targeted searches in areas linked to other identified suspects.
These operations aim to recover the missing cattle, find more weapons, and catch those responsible.
The Army called on the public to stay alert and share credible information about suspicious activities with security agencies.
It reaffirmed its commitment to “safeguarding lives and property” and ensuring a secure environment for peaceful living in Plateau State and the wider North Central region.
“The Nigerian Army remains determined to stop the spread of illegal arms, protect vulnerable communities, and deny criminals the chance to disrupt peace and security in Plateau State,” it stated.
