The Nigerian Law School has confirmed that a student died after falling from the rooftop of a hostel at its Lagos Campus.
The student, who came from the Enugu Campus, was in Lagos for the school’s externship programme. She was staying temporarily at the hostel on the Lagos Campus.
In a statement shared on its Facebook page on Monday, Aderonke Osho, the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, said the incident happened around 4 a.m. on Friday, 7 August.
“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement said.
The school did not reveal the name of the student or what caused her to fall.
It mentioned that they were working with the relevant authorities and the family of the deceased to find out what happened.
“The Management is working closely with the appropriate authorities and the family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed, and provide further information as appropriate,” Mr Osho said.
The management sent condolences to the family, friends, and others affected by this tragedy.
They also asked the public and the media to respect the family’s wish for privacy during this difficult time.
The school noted that the family wanted to grieve without any actions that could add to their pain.
The Nigerian Law School stated that it is committed to the safety and wellbeing of its students and staff.
This confirmation followed an earlier report on Sunday that identified the deceased as 23-year-old Faith Alayande. The Lagos State Police Command had confirmed the incident.
According to the report, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the incident was reported after the student was found unresponsive in the hostel.
Ms Adebisi noted that a hostel matron called the police after a fellow student and a relative found what looked like a suicide note.
She said the student allegedly jumped from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building before she could be located.
The report added that the student’s body was taken to a morgue, and police started an investigation into her death.
While the police account reported by PUNCH suggested a possible suicide, the Nigerian Law School’s statement on Monday only described the incident as a fall from the hostel rooftop. They did not mention that the student died by suicide.
This incident is not the first time a Nigerian Law School student has died in circumstances linked to suicide.
In December 2025, another student, Ayomiposi Ojajuni, reportedly died by suicide after being barred from sitting for the Bar Final examinations at the school’s Yola Campus in Adamawa State.
