The Defence Headquarters has reported that its X account has been hacked. They told the public to ignore any information that comes from that account.
The spokesperson, Samaila Uba, shared this news in a statement on Facebook on Saturday evening.
A quick check by PREMIUM TIMES showed that the account is filled with many posts about cryptocurrency. The account has a verification badge and more than 980,000 followers. Its name and military gallery are still the same.
Mr Uba, who is a major general, said they are treating the situation as a cybersecurity issue. He mentioned that they have taken technical steps to secure the account and stop any further unauthorized access.
"The Defence Headquarters assures the public that efforts are ongoing to fully restore control of the official account," he said.
He added, "Consequently, members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorized or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period." The military uses this account as one of the ways to share information about military operations, changes in leadership, and other defence matters.
Mr Uba did not mention exactly when the account was hacked. But it seems the hackers have been actively posting automated messages about cryptocurrency, with many posts made 19 hours ago.
The military spokesperson stated that the Defence Headquarters focuses on maintaining high standards of information security. They want to ensure the public gets accurate, timely, and credible information on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
He encouraged the public to check other official channels like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for accurate and verified information.
"We appreciate the understanding and vigilance of the public and will provide further updates as necessary," he concluded.
