NSCDC on the hunt for vandals, recovers ₦1.8m streetlight cables in Jigawa

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has started searching for suspected vandals. They recovered 212 metres of stolen streetlight cables worth over ₦1.8 million in Hadejia Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

This information came from a statement shared with our reporter by ASC Badruddeen Tijjani, the Public Relations Officer for NSCDC Jigawa State Command. The statement was made in Dutse, the state capital, on Friday.

Tijjani said the cables were taken from different spots in Hadejia Local Government Area. He added that this recovery is part of the corps’ renewed effort to protect important national assets and infrastructure across the state.

The case started with a report on July 23, 2026, from the Executive Chairman of Hadejia Local Government Area, Hon. Yaro Abba. “While returning from Kano, the chairman saw suspected stolen streetlight cables at an NSCDC checkpoint in Kano State. He thought they came from Hadejia and quickly informed our Hadejia Division,” Tijjani said.

He mentioned that the Divisional Officer for Hadejia Division, DSC Habibu Auwalu, went to Kano to check the information and work with the NSCDC Kano State Command. “Investigations confirmed that the cables, worth over ₦1.84 million, were taken illegally from different areas in Hadejia by suspected vandals,” Tijjani added.

After checking the facts, the recovered cables were confirmed to be the same ones stolen from Hadejia. On July 28, 2026, the NSCDC Kano State Command officially handed the recovered cables to the Jigawa State Command for further investigation and possible legal action.

Meanwhile, the NSCDC Jigawa State Commandant, CC Muhammad Ingawa, praised Yaro Abba for his alertness. “The Commandant thanked the chairman for sharing timely information that helped recover government property,” Tijjani reported.

He also appreciated the teamwork between the Jigawa and Kano commands. “He called the operation a clear sign of the corps’ dedication to protecting important national assets,” Tijjani said.

The commandant warned that vandalism will not be accepted in the state. “Everyone involved will be caught, arrested, and taken to court. Acts of economic sabotage harm public infrastructure and national progress,” Tijjani quoted the commandant.

The command also urged residents to help security agencies with reliable information. “The NSCDC Jigawa State Command is dedicated to protecting lives, property, and important national assets and infrastructure across the state,” Tijjani stated.
