NSCDC warns against election disruption in Osun State

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned that anyone trying to disrupt Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State will face serious consequences. Security agencies are stepping up their preparations for the poll. The NSCDC also warned against destroying electoral assets.

The Commandant-General of the corps, Abubakar Audi, gave this warning on Thursday during a visit to Osun State. He was there to check on security readiness and to work with key groups before the election.

“We don’t want any bloodshed. We will decisively deal with anyone who attempts to disrupt the electoral process,” Mr Audi stated. This was shared in a statement by the corps’ spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale.

His warning comes as security concerns rise ahead of the election. There have been reports of killings, clashes, and threats involving supporters of different political parties during the campaign period.

Protecting Electoral Assets

The NSCDC chief said the corps will focus on protecting important national assets and electoral materials. This includes facilities and items belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

During his visit, Mr Audi met with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, INEC officials, and NSCDC personnel in the state. This was part of efforts to improve security coordination before the election.

At the meeting, Governor Adeleke praised the Commandant-General for his visit. He asked the corps to send enough personnel to prevent violence and protect voters. He expressed worry about security threats he believes are linked to political groups trying to intimidate voters before the election.

The governor urged security agencies to find and arrest anyone planning to attack voters or disrupt the election process.

Upcoming Election

Osun voters are set to choose their governor on Saturday, August 15. The contest includes the current governor, Ademola Adeleke, and other candidates who want to lead the state for the next four years.

Mr Audi later visited the INEC state headquarters in Osogbo. He met with the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oluwatoyin Babalola. He reaffirmed that the corps will protect key national assets and electoral infrastructure, promising the commission the NSCDC's support during the election.

“The NSCDC is an important part of election security. We are partners in this process, and anyone who tries to vandalise assets or interfere with the election will be dealt with seriously,” he said.

Mr Audi then spoke to NSCDC personnel who will be on duty for the election at the corps’ state command headquarters. He instructed the officers to stay professional, act within the law, and follow the rules of engagement during the election.

The Commandant-General specifically warned against being “trigger-happy”. He urged them to remain calm while doing their work. He also told the officers to coordinate closely with other security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force, which is the main agency for election security.

Mr Audi said his personnel will work with other security agencies to protect the election process and ensure a safe environment for voters.
