Former Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Matthew Kolawole, has said that the projects and reforms carried out by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo will help him win re-election in the 2027 governorship election.
Kolawole spoke on Sunday in Lokoja. He highlighted the administration's work in areas like infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, agriculture, workers' welfare, and youth empowerment as proof of its performance since Ododo took office in January 2024.
He mentioned that the way INEC managed the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections showed that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, is ready to hold free and fair elections in 2027.
Kolawole said we should judge a government by what it achieves and how it affects the people's lives, not by political feelings.
He praised the Tinubu administration for starting reforms and development projects that could strengthen the economy and improve the lives of Nigerians.
Kolawole also expressed confidence in Ododo's chances in the 2027 election. He noted the government's commitment to infrastructure, security, education, and other areas of the state's economy.
He said, "Since taking office in January 2024, the Ododo administration has started many projects and programs aimed at improving the living conditions of residents and strengthening the state's economy. A major focus has been on infrastructure development, with the government building and repairing roads in many communities."
"The administration has also begun work on the planned Kogi International Airport. This project is expected to improve transportation, attract investment, and boost economic activities in the state. In education, the government has continued to support students through bursaries, scholarships, and paying examination fees. Many schools have also received renovations and repairs."
"The administration has also helped develop tertiary institutions in the state. This includes efforts to revive the MBBS program at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba. Healthcare has also received attention, with investments in primary healthcare facilities and efforts to improve access to medical services, especially in rural areas. The government has introduced measures to attract and keep medical staff in the state."
"Security is another major focus for the administration. Governor Ododo has improved collaboration among the police, military, vigilante groups, hunters, and other security agencies to combat crime. The administration has also supported community security initiatives and measures to enhance surveillance and protect lives and property in the state."
"In agriculture, the government is focusing on food security and agribusiness. This strategy aims to reduce unemployment, empower youth, and boost the state's economy. The administration has also prioritized workers' welfare, ensuring regular payment of salaries and addressing issues regarding promotions and entitlements. They've launched youth and women empowerment programs, including skills training and entrepreneurship support for young people and vulnerable groups."
"For revenue generation, the administration is implementing reforms to increase internally generated revenue, block leaks, and strengthen the financial management system. The 2026 budget includes funding for major housing and electrification projects, such as the planned construction of 1,050 housing units under the 'Ododo Villa' initiative across the three senatorial districts."
Kolawole said the Ododo administration has made it clear that its development plans are focused on security, infrastructure, human capital development, economic growth, and improving the welfare of Kogi State residents.
He added that the governor has repeatedly called for ongoing support and cooperation from the people, stressing that the administration is dedicated to delivering projects that will directly benefit them.
Kolawole urged political parties and their supporters to follow the rules and let INEC conduct the elections without interference.
He also encouraged Nigerians to actively participate in the electoral process. He believes peaceful and transparent elections are key to strengthening democracy in the country.
He concluded that the success of the 2027 elections will depend on the independence of electoral bodies, the behavior of political actors, and the willingness of everyone to accept the results of a truly free and fair election.
