Ogun State Suspends Eselu of Iselu Over Political Involvement

The Ogun State Government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, effective immediately. This action is due to claims of him taking part in partisan political activities.
The suspension was approved by the State Executive Council based on Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021. This comes as they prepare for a thorough investigation into the accusations against the monarch.
This decision was shared in a letter dated October 20, 2026. The letter was signed by Ganiyu Hamzat, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
In the letter, the council mentioned that they acted after receiving multiple complaints related to the traditional ruler’s behavior. They highlighted his alleged involvement in openly political activities, some of which he apparently made public.
The government pointed out that getting involved in partisan politics goes against customary law and is banned by law. They warned that such actions could harm the respect for the traditional institution and disrupt peaceful living among people with different political views.
They stated that the suspension aims to maintain peace, order, and good governance in Ogun State, especially in Iselu Kingdom, while the claims against him are being looked into.

As part of the suspension, Oba Akinyemi must leave the palace and not enter it during this time. He also cannot present himself as the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom or claim that title.
Additionally, he is forbidden from wearing or using any crown, whether beaded or not, or any other items linked to his office during the suspension period. This includes items like ileke, beaded staff, and irukere.
The letter also instructed him to be available for any meetings or discussions organized by the state government regarding the allegations against him.
Copies of the letter have been sent to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State for their information and necessary action.
