One person hurt as Abuja building partially falls

One person got minor injuries when a five-storey building under construction partially fell on Durban Street, Wuse II, Abuja, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

NEMA said through its Abuja Operations Office that it got an alert about the collapse around 6.30pm on Saturday.

In a statement released by its Press Unit on Sunday, the agency said it quickly activated emergency response teams. This included the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service. Their AYA Emergency Response Ambulance Bay team was sent to manage search and rescue efforts at the site.

"Findings at the scene indicated that the incident was minor and involved a five-storey building under construction that had been partially pulled down," the statement said.

The agency confirmed that no lives were lost. They added that the injured worker was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

This incident happened a few weeks after a three-storey building collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, on September 7, 2026. This collapse occurred just hours after officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Department of Development Control sealed the property and told people to leave due to safety concerns.

Reports said the building had shown signs of problems before it fell. Emergency responders were sent to the site, but there were no reported injuries at first.

The Wuse incident followed a deadly building collapse in the Durumi 3 area, close to Gudu Market, Abuja, on May 16, 2026. A three-storey building under construction fell, killing at least five people and injuring many others.

After the Durumi collapse, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered an investigation. The developer and an engineer connected to the project could face arrest.

Wike also warned developers to follow building rules and let the proper authorities check construction sites.
