One person killed as gunmen strike NIPSS again

Security forces on Wednesday night stopped another attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State. They killed one of the attackers during a gun battle, according to officials.

The attack happened around 11 p.m. Some gunmen tried to break into the institute’s outer security perimeter, security sources told PREMIUM TIMES.

In a statement on Thursday, the institute’s head of public affairs, Osime Samuel, said the attackers shot at security personnel until they had to pull back. He called it a quick and coordinated response by security forces.

"One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others fled, some with suspected gunshot injuries," the statement said.

Mr Samuel noted that the attackers could not get into the institute. He stressed that participants in the Senior Executive Course, staff members, residents, and facilities inside the institute were safe.

This incident comes just days after security forces stopped a similar attempt near the institute. This led to tighter security at this important facility.

Recently, NIPSS has increased its security measures. They added more armed personnel, improved night surveillance, stricter access controls, and worked closely with other security agencies to conduct joint patrols around Kuru and nearby areas.

Officials explained that these measures were put in place after intelligence reports warned of rising threats to important national institutions in Plateau State.

Authorities also confirmed that they are reviewing security plans to fix any weaknesses and ensure ongoing safety at the institute. NIPSS hosts senior public officials and policy leaders from all over the country.

This renewed attack shows there are serious security worries in parts of Plateau State. Federal and state authorities have often promised to boost protection around key national institutions and other public places.
