Osborn Umahi Seeks Ohaozara LG Chairmanship in Ebonyi State

Osborn Umahi, the All Progressives Congress candidate for Ohaozara Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, is gathering support ahead of the local government election set for August 22, 2026.

On Monday, August 17, Umahi, who is the son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, led a campaign at the St Margaret Umahi Pavilion in Uburu. Supporters came out to show their backing for his bid.

Umahi had previously secured the APC nomination and expression-of-interest forms to run for the Ohaozara chairmanship election, and he has now been confirmed as the party’s candidate.

The campaign is part of the buildup to the Ebonyi State local government election, offering a chance for residents and party supporters to rally around their chosen candidates.

A statement released on Tuesday by Francis Nwaze, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Works, highlighted the growing support for Umahi’s campaign.

The statement said, "The people of Ohaozara Local Government Area have demonstrated strong support and enthusiasm for the emergence of their young and vibrant son, Engr. Osborn Umahi, as a new generation of leadership."

It continued, saying the campaign was "widely seen as a strong demonstration of the growing acceptability of Engr. Umahi across the council area."

Umahi is described in the statement as an engineer and financial expert with leadership experience. His skills are seen as crucial for providing effective leadership if he is elected.

The statement noted that the campaign atmosphere reflected a strong desire among residents for leadership that is competent, experienced, fresh, and understanding of their needs.

"For many of those present, the campaign was not simply about political mobilization. It was an expression of confidence in one of Ohaozara’s own and a statement of expectation for a new chapter of leadership," it said.

The campaign also emphasized Umahi’s local ties and framed his candidacy as a chance for a new generation to take charge in Ohaozara.

As the election date approaches, the focus has shifted from how well the candidate is accepted to winning the election.

"As the August 22 election draws closer, the focus now shifts from acceptability to victory at the polls. The massive support witnessed at the campaign, supporters say, must be translated into votes on Saturday," the statement said.

The Ebonyi State local government election will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
