Otti's Abia Leadership Academy: Shaping Future Leaders

There are two ways to help young people. One is to give them fish. The other is to teach them how to fish, own the pond, and teach others too.

The Abia Leadership Academy, set up by the Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti, chose to teach.

This isn’t just another program to give out cash or tricycles. It is a solid investment in the minds that will shape Abia’s future.

The main idea behind the Abia Leadership Academy is straightforward but important: leaders come from mentorship and a choice to stand out from the crowd.

The Academy teaches the important responsibility that comes with leadership.

Governor Otti created the Academy to instill in young people the belief that prepares them to be champions from an early age.

A state can build roads and hospitals, but if it does not build people with character and vision, the progress will not last.

This is more important than handouts because cash handouts don’t last. Tricycles can break down. Political jobs end when a government leaves.

But skills, knowledge, and a changed mindset last longer than any government.

That is the strength of the Abia Leadership Academy. Instead of making youths rely on politicians during elections, it is making them independent, informed, and ready to lead in any area, business, governance, technology, education, and public service.

The Academy is giving Abia youths:

1. Intellectual empowerment, critical thinking, public speaking, ethics, and principles of governance.

1. Practical skills, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and leadership in real-life situations.

1. Mentorship, direct exposure to leaders who have succeeded and want to guide the next generation.

This is real empowerment that matters. A young person trained today will train 10 others tomorrow. That is how you build a state. That’s what Governor Otti is doing.

In 2025, the Academy trained its first group of 1000 youths.

For 2026, the Academy plans to train another 1000 youths aged between 16 and 20. This will make a total of 2000 trained young leaders in just two years.

Across Nigeria, the usual “youth empowerment” has been cash, motorcycles, and short-term political jobs. Those things might help win elections, but they do not build a state.

Governor Otti has shown a better way: empowerment through education, skills, and character.

Abia youths should remember that political appointments are not true empowerment. They are temporary. They finish when the term ends. But the mindset, discipline, and skills gained at the Abia Leadership Academy will last a lifetime.
