Peter Obi raises concerns over EFCC's freezing of Osun accounts

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has shown concern about the freezing of Osun State Government bank accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He is questioning the timing of this action just before the state’s governorship election.

In a statement on his X handle on Thursday, Obi said he supports the fight against corruption. But he warned that such efforts should not be used for political intimidation or to interfere with democracy.

“I have always supported a relentless fight against corruption. However, that fight must never become a tool for political intimidation or the suppression of democracy,” Obi said.

He pointed out that government institutions should stay independent and avoid actions that could raise doubts about their neutrality, especially during elections.

“The timing of this action raises legitimate questions. If investigations had been ongoing for months, why take such a drastic step on the eve of an election?” he asked.

Obi emphasized that public institutions must not only be impartial but also be seen as such to keep public trust in democracy.

The former governor of Anambra State warned against the growing belief that state institutions are being used for political ends. He described this trend as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

“Governments come and go, but once institutions lose their independence and credibility, the nation suffers,” he said.

Obi also agreed that allegations of wrongdoing should be looked into. But he insisted that due process and constitutional steps must be followed.

“If there is evidence of wrongdoing, the Constitution provides a clear path: seek the appropriate orders from a competent court. Due process is the foundation of justice,” he stated.

He called on the necessary authorities to work within the law and ensure nothing affects the credibility of the Osun governorship election.

Obi urged that voters in Osun State should be allowed to choose their leaders freely without intimidation or interference.

“Nigeria’s democracy was built on sacrifice. We must not allow it to be weakened by the misuse of institutions or the pursuit of political advantage,” he added.
