The Oyo State Police Command has arrested six people over suspected fake Euro notes. They recovered 89 pieces of what they believe are counterfeit €100 notes.
The police shared this news in a statement on their X page on Thursday. The suspects were caught on Tuesday, September 1, around 7:30pm. Police officers on patrol stopped three men riding a motorcycle in the Labo-Wesley area.
The suspects are Tijani Saheed, 50, who was found with the fake money; Oni Oladapo, 67, who is accused of supplying the cash; Adebayo Saheed, 52, who was also on the motorcycle; and Hammed Karemu, 25, the rider.
According to the police statement from DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, a search of the men led to the discovery of the suspected fake currency. "A search conducted on them led to the recovery of 89 pieces of suspected counterfeit €100 notes, with a total face value of €8,900," he said.
The police are still looking into how each of the four suspects got involved in this case. Olayinka mentioned, "During investigation, the suspects confessed to the commission of the crime and led operatives to the location where the suspected counterfeit currency was allegedly purchased."
The statement continued that a search of the premises resulted in finding items that might have been used to produce the counterfeit notes. This led to the arrest of the alleged producer, bringing the total number of suspects to six.
The police said all six suspects are in custody and are helping with the investigation. They will be charged in court once the investigation is complete.
Abimbola Olugbenga, the Commissioner of Police for Oyo State, praised the officers for their alertness and professionalism. Olugbenga stated that the command is dedicated to stopping criminal activities and protecting the community from financial crimes.
