Police catch 23-year-old man with loaded gun in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police has arrested a 23-year-old man with a loaded locally made shotgun in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.

In a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, journalists learned that the suspect is Mfon Essien from Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area. He was picked up along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, Ikot Ekpene, on Sunday.

John said this arrest is a big step in the ongoing fight against illegal firearms and violent crime in the state.

The statement said, “The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man with a loaded locally made shotgun in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.

“The suspect, identified as Mfon Essien from Ikot Inyang Itak Village in Ikono Local Government Area, was arrested along Ayah Road, off Uyo Road, Ikot Ekpene, on Sunday, September 6, 2026.”

According to the police, they got credible information that led to the arrest. Essien is now in police custody while investigations continue.

“The search of Essien reportedly led to the recovery of a locally made shotgun loaded with a live cartridge. The weapon was allegedly hidden under his clothing,” the statement said.

John said investigators are looking into where the gun came from, why Essien had it, and if he is connected to any criminal groups involved in illegal gun use.

The State Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, said the police will keep working to get illegal weapons off the streets and reduce violent crimes.

He warned anyone involved in illegal firearms possession that the police will continue to use intelligence-led operations, patrols, and other legal actions against them.

“We will continue our efforts to remove illegal weapons from the streets and prevent violent crimes. Those involved in the illegal possession and circulation of firearms should stop because we will continue to use intelligence-led operations, patrols, and other lawful measures against them,” he stated.

The Commissioner of Police also asked residents to stay alert and share any credible information about suspicious people, illegal weapons, and criminal activities.

He promised that the identities of those who give information would be kept secret.

“The Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across Akwa Ibom State,” the CP said.
