The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected murderer who had been on the run for about six months. They also broke up a robbery gang that has been troubling people in Ibiono Ibom and Itu Local Government Areas.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Timfon John, shared this news in a statement on Thursday.

John said the operations also led to the recovery of a locally made Dane gun, a single-barrel gun, eight live cartridges, and a suspected stolen motorcycle.

She mentioned that officers arrested Nsikak Akpan from Ikot Akpan-Edemaya in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area. He is accused of killing a man named Markanson, who is also from the same community.

John said the suspect allegedly committed this crime on January 6, 2026, and then ran away to avoid being caught.

After months of gathering intelligence and watching him, officers tracked and arrested him on June 30 at around 5:30 p.m.

"During questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime, and the locally made Dane gun he used was also found," she said.

“The suspect is now in police custody as investigations go on before he is taken to court,” she added.

John also noted that a different operation by the police led to breaking up a robbery gang that was known for stealing motorcycles at gunpoint in Ibiono Ibom and Itu local government areas.

She explained that this operation, done on June 29, took officers to the gang’s hideout at Nasarawa Market in Mbak Itam Village. There, they arrested a 22-year-old man named Destiny Ekong from Afaha Ube Itam in Itu Local Government Area.

According to the PPRO, they also found an unregistered Mate C90 motorcycle thought to be stolen during the raid.

She added that more intelligence led to the arrest of another suspect, Anietie John, 50, from Mbiakpan Atan Village.

John stated that a search of this suspect’s home led to finding a single-barreled gun and eight rounds of live cartridges believed to be linked to crime.

She said, “Both suspects are helping the police with ongoing investigations to catch other members of the gang and recover more stolen items.”

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Mohammed Azare, praised the officers involved in these operations. He also reaffirmed the command’s promise to fight crime in the state.

“He warned anyone involved in crime to stop or be ready to face serious consequences. He stressed that the Command’s intelligence system has been greatly improved to find and break up criminal groups in the state,” the statement added.

The commissioner also thanked residents for giving timely information to the police. He asked them to keep sharing useful information, promising that it would be kept secret.
