The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has warned drivers not to break traffic laws. They said anyone caught will face the law.
The police also promised to keep up their enforcement across all 31 local government areas in the state.
Timfon John, the command’s Public Relations Officer, released a statement in Uyo on Friday. He advised drivers to follow traffic laws closely. He made it clear that saying you did not know the law will not be accepted as an excuse.
The police said the aim of this enforcement is to make the roads safer, cut down on avoidable accidents, protect lives and property, and ensure smooth movement of people and vehicles in the state.
The statement highlighted that they will focus on specific offences. These include driving against traffic, driving without proper vehicle documents or a driver's licence, and using covered or fake number plates.
The police also mentioned that using unregistered vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles will attract penalties.
The statement said, “Akwa Ibom State Police Command wishes to inform the public, especially drivers, commercial drivers, motorcyclists, and tricycle operators, that we are continuing our statewide enforcement of traffic laws and regulations across Akwa Ibom State.
“The ongoing enforcement exercise aims to restore sanity on our roads, reduce avoidable road crashes, protect lives and property, and ensure free and orderly movement of people and vehicles throughout the State.
“Thus, all road users are strongly advised to comply strictly with traffic laws and regulations. We will pay special attention to offences such as: driving against traffic (one-way driving), and driving without valid vehicle documents or a driver's licence.
“We will also look out for covered, concealed, defaced, or unauthorised number plates, and other violations.
“Anyone caught breaking traffic laws will face penalties. Ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse. Drivers and motorcycle/tricycle operators should ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and that all required documents are valid before using public roads.”
John stated that Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, traffic officers, and other units have been instructed to increase enforcement in their areas.
She added that the exercise will be firm, and officers have been told to act professionally and respectfully with the public.
The police spokesperson warned that any form of extortion, harassment, unnecessary delays, or unprofessional behaviour will not be tolerated during the enforcement exercise.
