Operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Delta State Police have taken down a suspected drug ring. They recovered 21 bags of what they believe to be Indian hemp in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, SP Bright Edafe, shared this news in a statement to journalists in Warri on Sunday.
Edafe said this operation is part of the crime-fighting efforts led by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.
"On 8th August 2026, our VCRU operatives acted on reliable and actionable intelligence. They conducted a raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Owa-Abbi, located in Ukwani Local Government Area.
"During the operation, we arrested Lucky Oyiboka, 56, and found 21 bags of weeds thought to be Indian hemp during a thorough search of the premises," the statement partially read.
The police spokesperson noted that early investigations suggest the suspect was involved in distributing illegal drugs.
He explained, "We are intensifying our investigation to find out more about the drug network and identify others linked to this operation. The suspect is currently in custody and will face charges in court once the investigation is complete."
Ongoing Efforts Against Drugs
In the meantime, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, stressed the command's dedication to intelligence-led policing. He mentioned ongoing operations aimed at breaking down criminal networks and fighting the rise of illegal drugs in Delta.
He encouraged the public to keep providing the police with trustworthy and prompt information. He assured that "the identities of informants will be kept fully confidential."
