The Delta State Police Command has demoted an inspector and a corporal after they were caught extorting money from a driver using a Point-of-Sale terminal in a police station. This incident was shown in a viral video.

This information came out in a statement on Tuesday from the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, confirmed the findings of an orderly room trial for Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim from C Division, Asaba.

The officers were seen on January 13, 2026, in a viral video receiving money from a motorist through a POS terminal at the station. They were found guilty of “Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion and Discreditable Conduct,” which goes against the Police Act, 2020.

As a result, Jeremiah was demoted from Inspector to Sergeant, and Ehirim was downgraded from Corporal to Constable.

Oyeniyi emphasized the Force’s stance on extortion. He said Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu “unequivocally prohibits the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms within Police stations and formations.”

The Commissioner warned that “no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.” He added that “any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary action.”

He urged officers to maintain “the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for the rights of citizens.” He noted that the punishment should act as a warning to others.

Oyeniyi said the disciplinary measures “should serve as a deterrent” and reiterated the Command’s commitment to “discipline, accountability and public trust.”

He also encouraged the public to keep reporting cases of police misconduct through the right channels. He assured that complaints against any officer that misbehaves would be investigated according to the law.
